Extremely sad news, legendary comedian and #1 shade queen Joan Rivers has passed away at the age of 81-years-old.
Joan Rivers passed away peacefully yesterday surrounded by family and close friends at Mount Sinai Hospital. The iconic comedian had recently gone under cardiac arrest following a routine endoscopy procedure. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, released a statement yesterday confirming the passing of her mother and to acknowledge the out pour of love and support her family received:
"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother. She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son [Cooper] and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon"
For over five decades Joan Rivers made people laugh! She got her start as a guest host on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965. Then in 1986, she received her own program, The Late Show. Her outspoken approach broke barriers in comedy and paved the way for many female comedians. In 1994, she began hosting the legendary E! award pre-shows and then left for a brief career at TV Guide! However, she returned to E! in 2010 to host the now infamous show Fashion Police.
In true Joan Rivers fashion she knew wanted to go out with a bang! So in her book, I Hate Everyone…Starting With Me, she gave a detail description of how she wanted her funeral to be. She wanted big and over-the-top Hollywood Glam:
“When I die, I want my funeral to be a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action…I want Craft services, I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene! I want it to be Hollywood all the way. I don’t want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. I don’t want a eulogy; I want Bobby Vinton to pick up my head and sing “Mr. Lonely.” I want to look gorgeous, better dead than I do alive. I want to be buried in a Valentino gown and I want Harry Winston to make me a toe tag. And I want a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyoncé’s.”
Absolutely hilarious! Joan Rivers was unapologetic and said whatever was on her mind (good or bad)! She kept us laughing on Fashion Police and always kept a SASSY attitude! Her shade is LEGENDARY and that is what we will miss the most! She kept it real no matter who or what she talked about. The SASS sends our thoughts and prayers to her family during this difficult time. She will definitely be missed.
